rosh hashanah 2012

If you’re on the monthly-ish email list for floralfetish.com, then last week this is the email you would have received in preparation for Rosh Hashanah. Enjoy!

a trilogy is a great solution to a long and low centerpiece; 3 repetitions of the same design for length, with seasonal fruit accenting the tabletop

I feel fortunate being in Canada where we have access to learn about many of the cultures in our world. I don’t know about you, but my life journey to date has opened my heart and eyes to so so many different lifestyles, foods, spiritual practices, and faiths. I love that in and around Toronto there is a rich, and I believe a very open-mindedness to a vast spectrum of people. I especially love to indulge in the cuisines, cultures and customs of others. This fascinates me! I learn so much when I ask questions and open my mind to new experiences. I have found that I gather and adopt what resonates with me. Be it a morsel from one faith, a viewpoint of another and I keep braiding these into my own Weltanschauung as I keep growing.

This weekend many of our friends and neighbours will be observing the Jewish New Year. There will be many familial gatherings, and friendly celebrations where people will be looking forward to the New Year ahead. Did you know that the act of ‘forgiveness’ plays a major role this weekend? Which makes sense; it is much easier to move frontward when you’re not dragging baggage. Right? Yeah, exactly!

I was also reading that there is a custom of throwing pieces of bread- symbolizing sins- into a flowing body of water. I will be asking Candace more about this; she is my treasure chest of Jewish knowledge. This exercise brings me back to a memory I have of Poland. There is a tradition where, into a river or body of water, wreaths of flowers where set afloat, and I believe on fire (?) It’s quite picturesque. If you can imagine, the view from a random bridge or looking onto a flowing stream and haphazardly a parade of chance wreaths would be floating free, released into the care of the water’s current, to go wherever it goes.

dahlia, with showy blooms are bountiful, local and in season now. when cut they last 3-5ish days.

Now back to Rosh Hashanah, to represent good health and a sweet year, I am certainly going to make a point of indulging in apples & local honey (hmm is a cocktail version allowed? C’mon. Honestly, doesn’t Calvados come to mind?) And also, I’m on the lookout for a pomegranate, which symbolizes an abundance of good and happiness.

Flowers must be delivered before sundown this Sunday. So if you would like to send warm wishes to friends or loved ones, please email me, respond to this note or ring me so that I can put your floral orders together. I look forward to hearing from you! And may you have a promising and sweet year ahead filled with good health, love and warm memories.

Kindly,

Bella
